NEW DELHI, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- India celebrated the silver medal won by its javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra on Thursday night at the Paris Olympics.

The young athlete's family in the country's northern state of Haryana were seen distributing sweets at their residence over Chopra's feat.

This was Chopra's second Olympic medal, following a gold at Tokyo 2020.

This was India's first silver medal so far at the Paris Olympics. With four bronze medals and one silver, India now stands 63rd in the overall medal tally.

In his second attempt, Chopra threw 89.45 meters, behind Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem's winning throw of 92.97 meters, which also set a new Olympic record.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first ones to congratulate Chopra over his achievement.
