JERUSALEM, July 30 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli military announced in a statement on Tuesday that it conducted "a targeted strike" in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, to eliminate a Hezbollah commander.

According to the military, the commander was responsible for launching a rocket that resulted in the deaths of 12 children in the Druze town of Majdal Shams in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Saturday.

Israel's state-owned Kan TV news identified the commander as Hajj Muhassin, who is in charge of Hezbollah's precision missiles project and serves as a military advisor to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

The commander's immediate condition was not clear, but Lebanese media reported that two people were killed in the attack.

There were no changes in the Home Front Command's defensive guidelines, said the Israeli military.

Israel has blamed Hezbollah for Saturday's Majdal Shams attack, in which Hezbollah has denied any involvement.
