GUANGZHOU, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Li Jinzhu, a former deputy head of the standing committee of the Shaanxi Provincial People's Congress, on Thursday stood trial at a court in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, for alleged bribery-taking.

Li is facing bribery charges including accepting bribes worth more than 432 million yuan (about 60.8 million U.S. dollars), according to the prosecutors.

Li, also the former vice governor of Shaanxi, took advantage of his various positions in the province to provide help to others in matters concerning business operations, project contracting, and appointment of officials, while illegally accepting money and gifts in return.

During the trial, prosecutors, the defendant and his defense counsel cross-examined the evidence and gave their respective accounts.

Li pleaded guilty and expressed remorse in his final statement.

The court said the verdict will be announced in due course.
