DAR ES SALAAM, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Fourteen pupils from six primary schools across Tanzania on Wednesday showed their mastery of Chinese language and culture in a "Chinese Bridge" contest for foreign primary school pupils.

The competition was held at the Confucius Institute at the University of Dar es Salaam, in the country's largest city and commercial hub.

Ten-year-old Tausi Julius, from Longquan Bodhi Primary School on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam, was the overall winner.

She will travel to China later this year to participate in the first global Chinese Bridge contest for foreign primary school pupils.

"My travel to China will enable me to learn more about the Chinese language and culture," Tausi told Xinhua.

Bonaventure Rutinwa, deputy vice chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam, praised the Confucius Institute at the University of Dar es Salaam for promoting mutual understanding and friendly cooperation between China and Tanzania.

The Confucius Institute has been instrumental in enhancing cultural exchange and Chinese language learning as an effective approach to further development of Tanzania-China ties, Rutinwa said.
