BLANTYRE, Malawi, May 3 (Xinhua) -- The former Malawian leader of the opposition and Vice President of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Kondwani Nankhumwa, has formed his own party, the People's Development Party (PDP), ahead of the general elections in September 2025.

Nankhumwa unveiled his party on Thursday at a press conference held in the country's commercial hub of Blantyre, saying that the PDP "aims to represent the needs of all Malawians."

As the president of the PDP, Nankhumwa said he will uphold "intra-party democracy and an open-door policy, and everyone is free to join and assume leadership roles".

The 46-year-old politician was one of the opposition DPP's heavyweights, and he was, until recently, the party's vice president for the southern region, and leader of the opposition in parliament.

He has served in various cabinets and party positions in the governments of Bingu Mutharika and Peter Mutharika, respectively, before registering the new party.

Malawi has six political parties represented in parliament: the ruling Malawi Congress Party, the Democratic Progressive Party, the United Transformation Movement, the United Democratic Front, the People's Party and the Alliance for Democracy.
