COLOMBO, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Speaker of Sri Lankan Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana on Thursday endorsed the certificate on the Online Safety Bill, a statement from the Department of Communication of Parliament said.
The bill will come into effect as the Online Safety Act No.9 of 2024, said the statement.
The bill was passed in the parliament with amendments after a two-day debate on Jan. 23-24.
Earlier, President Ranil Wickremesinghe's government said the new law will be used to deal with cybercrimes, including child abuse, data theft and online fraud. ■
