COLOMBO, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's government has paid 225 million rupees (697,000 U.S. dollars) to the families of those killed in the Easter Sunday terror attacks as compensation, Chief Government Whip Prasanna Ranatunga told the country's parliament on Friday.
Responding to a question posed by an opposition legislator, Ranatunga said a scholarship scheme has also been introduced for the children of the Easter Sunday attack victims.
Ranatunga said the state has paid a million rupees (3,100 dollars) each for seven children who have lost their parents.
Ranatunga said the government has appointed grassroots officials to inquire into the wellbeing of these children.
Over 260 people were killed in the suicide blasts in several churches and hotels in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo on April 21, 2019. ■
