YANGON, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's renowned classical musician Mar Mar Aye has died at 81 at her residence in Fort Wayne, the United States, the state-run daily The Mirror reported on Wednesday.

The musician died of cancer on Jan. 8, the report said.

Mar Mar Aye started singing at the age of over three at the Khitthit Razawun Drama Troupe and began radio singing at eight.

She rose to fame with the song "Let's Play on the Rainbow" in 1955 while still in middle school.

Besides singing, she was also good at writing. She wrote poems and songs under the pen name "Lay Mar" from a young age.

"She always told her relatives and audiences that she wants to return to Myanmar and to wait for her return. And she will sing the songs until the end of her life," according to her daughter Daw Aye Lwin Lwin Oo.

She was born in Myaungmya township of Ayeyarwady region, Myanmar on July 26, 1942. She descended from a family of musicians. Her father, U Aye, was a Myanmar clarinet player, and her mother, Daw Than Hni, was a singer.

Mar Mar Aye, a multi-talented artist, moved to the United States in 1998. She performed for Myanmar immigrants in Britain, Australia, Japan, and various states of the United States, the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar reported.
