YANGON, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's renowned archaeological site Bagan welcomed over 2 million tourists including more than 10,000 foreign tourists this year, an official told Xinhua on Sunday.
"Bagan is a popular destination among domestic and international tourists. The road to Bagan is safe, easy and convenient, and there are many places to visit in Bagan," said U Win Aung, deputy director of Bagan's Directorate of Hotels and Tourism.
This year, tourist arrivals to Bagan have increased by 50 percent compared to last year, which can generate more income for local people and improve their lives, he said.
"We cooperated with the administration teams to make Bagan clean and peaceful. Pagodas in Bagan are cleaned once every two weeks," he said.
Bagan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the top tourist attractions in Myanmar. There are over 3,000 pagodas in Bagan, an ancient city situated in the Mandalay Region. ■
