ATHENS, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- The world's first museum dedicated to late Greek opera singer Maria Callas will open its doors here on Thursday, the municipality of Athens announced on Wednesday.
The Maria Callas Museum is aimed to showcase the iconic diva's unique art and talent, and preserve her memory for future generations, said Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis during a media tour to the museum site in central Athens.
With over 1,000 square meters of exhibition space, the museum boasts an extensive array of artifacts, documents, personal items, costumes, photos, recordings, and memorabilia about Callas, one of the 20th century's most renowned sopranos.
Born in the United States in 1923, Callas first performed in Greece as a teenager before embarking on her international career. She died of a heart attack in Paris at the age of 53 in 1977. Her ashes were scattered over the Aegean Sea. ■
