SEOUL, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Seodaemun-gu (district) of Seoul, the capital city of South Korea, hosted a concert titled "Song of Hope and Joy" on Monday evening to celebrate the upcoming 78th anniversary of the Korean Liberation Day.

The concert is part of "Seodaemun Independence Festival" held to commemorate Aug. 15, the day in the year of 1945 when the Korean Peninsula was liberated from Japanese colonial rule. The festival, which started from Saturday and will last till Tuesday, includes concerts, taekwondo performances and a series of other celebrations.

In addition, a special exhibition, which focuses on the historical moment on Aug. 15, 1945 when the Korean Peninsula was liberated after Japan announced surrender without condition, was held at Seodaemun Prison History Hall in Seoul from Saturday.

Seodaemun Prison History Hall was used to imprison independence fighters in the peninsula until it was liberated from Japanese colonial rule.

Patriots suffered humiliation and repression in the Seodaemun Prison when the Korean Peninsula was occupied by Imperial Japan, and they were released after Japan announced surrender, Lee Sung-heon, mayor of Seodaemun-gu, told Xinhua.

The exhibition was held to rekindle the joy of the country's liberation, so that people may cherish the hard-won national independence, Lee added.
