UNITED NATIONS, July 7 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres does not want to see the continued use of cluster munitions, said his deputy spokesman on Friday, in reaction to U.S. approval of cluster munitions for Ukraine.
The secretary-general supports the Convention on Cluster Munitions, which was adopted 15 years ago, and he wants countries to abide by the terms of that convention, said Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesman.
"As a result, of course, he does not want there to be continued use of cluster munitions on the battlefield," said Haq, answering a question on Guterres' reaction to the U.S. approval of cluster munitions for Ukraine.
Asked whether Guterres would raise the issue with the U.S. authorities, Haq said the secretary-general is clear with all of his interlocutors what his views are on this issue.
U.S. media reports said the Biden administration will provide Ukraine with cluster munitions to help the country in its military conflict with Russia.
The Convention on Cluster Munitions, ratified by more than 100 countries, bans the use of cluster munitions. ■
