KABUL, June 26 (Xinhua) -- More than 74,000 Afghan refugees have returned to their homeland Afghanistan from neighboring Iran over the past month, the state-run Bakhtar news agency reported on Monday.

A total of 74,036 Afghan refugees who used to stay as refugees in Iran for years returned to their homeland via Afghanistan's Nimroz province over the past month, and the process continues, the report said.

More than 2.5 million registered Afghan refugees reportedly have been living in Iran and about the same number of Afghan refugees are in Pakistan.

The Afghan caretaker government has been calling upon Afghan refugees living abroad to return home and contribute to the reconstruction of their war-ravaged country.
