MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghanistan, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Afghan authorities reactivated the only silo three decades after it was rendered idle in Mazar-i-Sharif city, capital of northern Balkh province, on Monday.

"At the moment one oven of the silo has begun operation to bake bread and efforts are underway to activate 18 other ovens to increase our products," director of the silo, Mohammad Jawed Sedidi, said in his opening remarks.

Like other infrastructures, the erstwhile Soviet Union-made silo in Mazar-i-Sharif has been damaged due to decades of war in the war-torn Afghanistan.

"With installing necessary machines and resumption of full flagged operation of the silo, job opportunities would be provided for 400 people, including 50 women," the official added.

This is the second silo that has been reactivated by the authorities in the war-torn Afghanistan over several months.

Earlier, the authorities reactivated the Kabul silo in the national capital, which can produce bread, pastry and a variety of cakes and cookies.
