BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Pork prices in China surged week on week, according to official data.
From Sept. 5 to 9, the average pork price tracked by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs was 30.69 yuan (about 4.43 U.S. dollars) per kg, up 1.2 percent week on week. The price was 69.4 percent higher than a year ago.
The ministry has attributed the price rise to the "reluctance to sell" market sentiment before the Mid-Autumn Festival and some regions stocking up on pork in advance.
The price of pork, China's staple meat, has continued to rise in recent weeks. The National Development and Reform Commission will release about 200,000 tonnes of pork from government reserves to the market in September to maintain supply and price stability. ■
