HELSINKI, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Halla Tomasdottir was inaugurated as Iceland's new president on Thursday, calling for vigilance against oversimplified and extreme solutions amid the current global climate of increasing conflict and declining trust.

In her inaugural address from the parliament building, Tomasdottir highlighted her country's advancements in education, healthcare, and prosperity over the past 80 years. She emphasized the importance of continuing to build on these strengths, fostering creativity, and setting high standards.

She stressed the need for dialogue, collaboration, and inclusivity, particularly involving the younger generation. She emphasized the importance of mental and social health, the dangers of technological manipulation, and the necessity of fostering trust and unity to navigate the challenges ahead.

Tomasdottir expressed her belief that Iceland, as a small yet vigorous and courageous nation, has the wisdom and ambition to choose more moderate paths in a harsh world.

Tomasdottir, born in Reykjavik on October 11, 1968, won Iceland's presidential election held on June 1. She succeeds Gudni Th. Johannesson, who had served since 2016 and chose not to seek re-election. She is the second woman to hold the Icelandic presidency.

The President serves as Iceland's head of state and is primarily a ceremonial figure. Although the President appoints ministers to Iceland's cabinet and their signature is required for parliament-approved legislation to take effect, their political power is limited.

Presidential elections are held every four years in Iceland, with no term limit for the office.
