NEW DELHI, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- A policeman belonging to Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) was killed and another wounded on Wednesday in a Naxal attack in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, police said.
The attack took place in Chhote Dongar police station area of Narayanpur district, about 280 km south of Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh.
"Today Naxals attacked a contingent of CAF by first triggering an improvised explosive device (IED) in the Aamdai Ghati iron ore mine area and then resorting to firing. The fire was retaliated resulting in a gunfight," a police official said.
According to the police, the CAF contingent was on an area domination operation.
The attack came hours before the swearing-in ceremony of Chhattisgarh's new Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to be present during the ceremony.
In the past two days the IEDs wounded two paramilitary troopers and one policeman in Kistaram police station area of Sukma district.
Currently, the Naxal rebels are active across the central and eastern parts of India.
The insurgency reportedly has claimed hundreds of lives besides rendering thousands of poor inhabitants homeless. ■
