YANGON, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar exported more than 517 tons of honey worth over 776,000 U.S. dollars in the first quarter of the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation said on Monday.

The country exported 100.41 tons of honey in April, 336.7 tons in May and over 80 tons in June to Japan, South Korea, Thailand, the United States and Singapore, the Apiculture Division under the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department of the ministry said.

"The exports of honey during the period this year were up about 15 percent, as compared to the same period last year," U Soe Naing, an official at the ministry, told Xinhua on Monday.

He said that the apiculture division was importing queen bees from foreign countries and distributing them to bee farmers in order to assist the bee growers. The department was actively involved in fostering the development of private-sector beekeeping businesses, he added.

The Southeast Asian country produces about 7,000 tons of honey annually.

Myanmar's exported animal products, including honey, were valued at 1.682 million dollars during the April-June period this year, showed the data from the Ministry of Commerce.

The country exports agricultural, animal, marine, minerals and forest products, as well as manufactured goods.
