COLOMBO, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's official reserves were 1.85 billion U.S. dollars by the end of June 2022, the central bank said on Friday.

Sri Lanka's reserves stood at 7.6 billion dollars at the end of 2019 but had been falling ever since.

Reserves fell to 5.7 billion dollars by the end of 2020.

According to central bank statistics, reserves fell to 3.1 billion dollars by the end of 2021, and to 1.9 billion dollars by the end of March 2022.

The decline in reserves has meant that Sri Lanka has trouble in importing essential items like fuel and medicine.

The International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and several other donors have called for a macroeconomic plan made by the Sri Lankan government before providing financial assistance.
