MAPUTO, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Mozambique on Thursday started the 45-day voter registration for the municipal elections scheduled for Oct. 11, with President Filipe Nyusi and his wife Isaura Nyusi joining the process on the first day to encourage Mozambicans to participate in the country's political life.

Polls in October will elect local leaders -- city mayors and presidents for local assemblies -- of the 65 municipalities across the country.

After registering and receiving the voter's card, President Nyusi posted a short message on his Facebook page, saying that "the card is in good quality and easy to use, which shows that we've been getting better with each passing year." He urged all his fellow countrymen to register so that they can exercise their civic rights and duty.

Altogether 3,192 brigades and 4,292 posts are reportedly distributed for the voter registration process.

The country expects to register almost 10 million voting-age adults from April 20 to June 3, 2 million more than the last time, according to the National Institute of Statistics.

Statistics show that there are only 2/3 of the country's entire voting-age population as the rest live in districts without elected municipalities and can only register and vote in national elections in 2024.
