ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat on Sunday expressed condolences over the tragic road accident that killed more than 40 people in Senegal.
Forty people were killed and several others injured in a collision between two buses in the Kaffrine region, central Senegal Sunday, according to the local authorities in charge of relief and health.
"I express my sincere condolences and my deep compassion to the families of the victims of the tragic road accident, which killed more than 40 people in Senegal," Faki said in a Twitter post. "My wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured and all my solidarity with President Macky Sall, the government and the Senegalese people."
Senegalese President Macky Sall decreed a three-day national mourning following the traffic accident. He added that an inter-ministerial council will hold a meeting on the same date to take firm measures on road safety and public passenger transport. ■
