
BEIJING, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.48 percent to 2,788.55 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.95 percent lower at 8,212.84 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices totaled 758.3 billion yuan (about 106.7 billion U.S. dollars), up from 663.7 billion yuan on the previous trading day.
Most sectors suffered losses, with stocks in the textile industry declining the most. Bucking the trend, media and entertainment shares went up.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.66 percent to close at 1,573.37 points Wednesday. ■
