BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines over the past week:

1. Olympic champion Gao Tingyu dreams to become speed skating icon

On February 12, 2022, Gao Tingyu took the speed skating men's 500m gold in an Olympic record time of 34.32 seconds at the National Speed Skating Oval on home ice, becoming the first Chinese male skater to win an Olympic gold.

Now the two-time Olympic medalist is getting ready to embark on a new journey with his trusted coach towards Milano Cortina 2026.

"I want to become a speed skating icon, someone that people think of when they mention this sport."

2. Wang Shuang scores first goal for Racing Louisville

Chinese striker Wang Shuang scored her first goal for Racing Louisville FC, as Kim Bjorkegren's side beat AC Milan in the Women's Cup semifinal on August 17 in Louisville, facing OL Reign in Saturday's final.

The U.S. National Women's Soccer League side is Wang's third overseas club, following previous spells with Daejeon Sportstoto of South Korea and French outfit Paris Saint-Germain.

3. Wu Lei returns to China from Espanyol

Chinese international striker Wu Lei has returned to China from La Liga club Espanyol, as he posted two pictures on social media on August 16 showing him checking in at a Madrid airport for the journey back to China.

Wu is serving a seven-day quarantine and three-day home isolation before he joins up with Shanghai Port, the Chinese Super League side he left in early 2019 for Espanyol.

After his return, the first game Wu could play for Shanghai Port is at Henan Songshan Longmen on September 3.

4. China women's volleyball team announces roster for World Championships

China's national women's volleyball team revealed its roster for the upcoming Volleyball World Championships, with Zhu Ting and Zhang Changning absent from the squad due to injury.

The women's competitions of the 2022 Volleyball World Championships will take place from September 23 to October 15 in the Netherlands and Poland.

China is in Group D with Brazil, Japan, Colombia, Argentina and the Czech Republic.

5. China beats Japan to claim AVC Cup champion

China beat Japan 25-20, 25-23, 25-22 in the 2022 AVC (Asian Volleyball Confederation) Cup final on August 14 to claim the trophy with a perfect record.

China's young ace Zhang Jingyin was awarded the Most Valuable Player and was named one of the Best Outside Spikers, while his teammates Zhang Zhejia and Peng Shikun shared the Best Middle Blockers award.
