DUSHANBE, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Global Governance Initiative (GGI) proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping reflects the objective transformation of the world system and responds to the aspirations of most countries for a more just and equitable system of global governance, said Rahmon Ulmasov, a professor at the Russian-Tajik (Slavonic) University.
In a recent interview with Xinhua, Ulmasov described the initiative as one of China's most significant initiatives in recent years, saying it came at a time when the existing global governance system was facing serious challenges.
"Geopolitical conflicts, sanctions and trade wars are intensifying, while the gap between developed and developing countries is widening. At the same time, existing international institutions are becoming increasingly inadequate in addressing global problems," Ulmasov said.
Against this backdrop, he said, reforming and improving global governance has become increasingly important to ensure that international institutions can better respond to emerging challenges and reflect the interests and concerns of countries around the world.
Ulmasov noted that the GGI builds on China's previously proposed Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative and Global Civilization Initiative.
"Together, they form a coherent Chinese vision for international development, based on the interconnection between development, security, dialogue among civilizations and the improvement of global governance," he said.
He stressed that global governance should be based on equality among countries and decision-making through consultation, which is in line with the core principles of the GGI.
In his view, effective global governance also requires countries with different political systems, civilizational traditions and national interests to strengthen dialogue and seek common ground while respecting their differences.
"The ability to build cooperation despite differences is one of the most important elements of modern multilateral governance," Ulmasov added.■
