BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines from the past week:
1. China bags record 169 golds as Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games closes
The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games came to a close on Oct. 4, with China topping the gold medal table for the 12th consecutive edition, and finishing with 169 gold, 89 silver and 83 bronze medals, its best haul at an overseas Asiad.
The delegation competed in 369 of the Games' events across 38 sports and 59 disciplines, winning gold in 38 of those disciplines and medals in 47, despite fielding fewer athletes and entries than at the previous Games in Hangzhou and facing a reduced number of medal events to contest.
"After the Nagoya Asian Games, we will immediately shift to preparations for the Los Angeles Olympics, accelerate efforts to address our weaknesses, comprehensively improve our competitive level, and go all out to meet the challenge of the Los Angeles Olympics," Zhang Xin, secretary-general of the Chinese delegation, said in a statement.
2. Changchun 2027 marks 100-day countdown
Medals, the torch, uniforms and equipment for the Changchun 2027 Winter Universiade were unveiled on Oct. 7 as the Games celebrate its 100-day countdown.
The torch, named "Ji Xiang," or "Auspicious Flight," is inspired by the clivia, Changchun's city flower. The medals, named "Ji Meng," or "Auspicious Dream," combine traditional Chinese cultural elements, winter sports imagery and features associated with Changchun.
The flame for Changchun 2027 was lit on Oct. 8 in Turin, Italy, where the first World University Games were held in 1959.
Scheduled to open on Jan. 15, the Games will feature 97 events across 12 sports. Changchun will host 61 events across five ice sports and four snow sports, while Jilin City will stage 36 events across four snow sports.
3. China's Zheng advances to second China Open semis
China's Zheng Qinwen advanced to her second China Open women's singles semifinal, where she faces 13th-seeded Elise Mertens on Oct. 10 after the Belgian stunned eighth seed Iga Swiatek of Poland.
Zheng defeated sixth seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-3, 7-6 (6). Wild card Zheng broke serve three times to take the opening set. After the pair swapped breaks midway through the second, Zheng came from 2-0 down to take the tie-break 8-6.
Women's doubles top seeds, China's Zhang Shuai and the Czech Republic's Katerina Siniakova, beat fifth-seeded Storm Hunter of Australia and Kristina Mladenovic of France 6-2, 6-2 to reach the semifinals, where they face Mertens and Russia's Diana Shnaider.
4. Top seed Wang reaches women's semifinals at China WTT China Smash
Top seed Wang Manyu of China advanced to the women's singles semifinals at the 2026 WTT China Smash on Friday, sweeping South Korea's Shin Yu-bin 4-0.
Wang's compatriot Chen Xingtong rallied from two games down to eliminate Japanese chopper Honoka Hashimoto 5-11, 8-11, 11-2, 12-10, 11-3, 11-6, securing her first win in their third encounter.
In the men's singles, China's Zhou Qihao beat South Korea's Jang Woo-jin 4-2 to set up a semifinal clash with world No. 1 Sora Matsushima, who beat Chinese Taipei's Feng Yi-hsin 4-1.
5. China suffers third straight defeat with loss to Tajikistan in football friendly
China's men's football team lost 1-0 to Tajikistan in a friendly on Oct. 6, suffering its third consecutive defeat.
Vahdat Khanonov scored in the 53rd minute after China goalkeeper Liu Dianzuo spilled a long-range shot, and China's chances worsened when Wei Shihao was sent off six minutes later for a second yellow card.
The loss followed China's heavy 5-0 defeat to Palestine in its previous match and marked the first time Tajikistan had scored against China since 1998.■
