BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.79 percent to 3,811.9 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.07 percent lower at 12,620.9 points.
Turnover of stocks covered by the two indices totaled about 1.68 trillion yuan (approximately 249.38 billion U.S. dollars), up from 1.44 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
Oil, power and shipbuilding sectors posted solid gains, while electronic information, automobile manufacturing and medical equipment sectors saw notable declines.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 3.15 percent to close at 3,036.66 points Thursday.
The STAR Composite Index, which reflects the performance of stocks on China's sci-tech innovation board, closed 4.55 percent lower at 1,732.58 points on Thursday. ■
