BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines from the past week:
1. China achieves best performance at overseas Asian Games
China swept the men's and women's golf team titles on October 3 at the 2026 Asian Games, securing its first gold medals in the sport.
Yin Ruoning, Liu Yan and Zhang Weiwei won the women's team title with a four-round total of 538 strokes, eight ahead of India. Chinese Taipei took bronze. Liu shot a closing 66 and Yin a 67 to deliver China's first Asian Games golf gold.
Ding Wenyi, Zheng Yunhe and Jin Zihao completed China's team double in the men's event with 532 strokes, two ahead of South Korea, while host Japan took bronze. It was China's 166th gold at Aichi-Nagoya, marking its best performance at an overseas Asian Games, with the previous record of 165 coming from the Doha Games in 2006.
After the penultimate action of the Games, China topped the medal table with 169 golds, 89 silvers and 83 bronzes.
2. China claims 100th Asian Games diving gold
China's Olympic champion Lian Junjie won the men's 10m platform gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games on September 30, delivering China's 100th Asian Games diving gold medal and completing the Chinese team's sweep of all 10 diving titles at the Games.
Lian scored 501.25 points at the Tokyo Aquatics Center to take the title. Japan's Rikuto Tamai finished second with 497.20 points, while China's 15-year-old Zhao Renjie took bronze with 427.50.
Earlier in the day, Olympic champion Chen Yiwen scored 358.05 to win the women's 3m springboard title, also China's 99th diving gold in Asiad. Teammate Chen Jia finished second with 347.45 points, while Japan's Sayaka Mikami took bronze with 332.35.
The victory gave Chen her second gold medal at the Games, after she teamed up with Chen Jia to win the women's synchronized 3m springboard title on September 27.
3. Lin wins men's singles for third gold as China takes six table tennis titles
China's Lin Shidong swept compatriot Wang Chuqin 4-0 to win the men's singles title and also his third gold here as table tennis competition concluded at the 2026 Asian Games on September 28.
The final was Lin's 20th match of the Games after he also competed in men's team, men's doubles and mixed doubles events. He had already won two gold medals in mixed and men's doubles and a silver in men's team.
China finished the table tennis competition with six of the seven gold medals available, missing out only the men's team title.
4. Mu Xinyue becomes first female Asian Games esports gold medalist
China's Mu Xinyue became the first female athlete to win an Asian Games esports gold medal after China defeated Japan in the Identity V Asian Games Version final at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on September 30.
Asian Games esports events are open to both male and female athletes, but men continue to make up the overwhelming majority of registered athletes. According to registration data for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, more than 500 athletes were registered for esports, with only 14 of them women.
Esports made its Asian Games debut as a demonstration sport at Jakarta 2018 before becoming an official medal sport at Hangzhou in 2023. The number of medal events has increased from seven in Hangzhou to 11 at Aichi-Nagoya, with Identity V Asian Games Version making its Asian Games debut.
China entered four of the 11 esports events at Aichi-Nagoya -- Naraka: Bladepoint, Honor of Kings, Game for Peace Asian Games Version and Identity V Asian Games Version. China won gold in Naraka: Bladepoint and Honor of Kings and silver in Game for Peace Asian Games Version before adding the Identity V gold, concluding its esports campaign with three gold medals and one silver.
5. Zheng advances into China Open third round as Kalinskaya withdraws
China's Zheng Qinwen advanced to the third round of the China Open on October 3 after Russia's Anna Kalinskaya retired while trailing 3-0 in the deciding set.
Playing in front of a packed Diamond Court, Zheng earned the first break in the eighth game of the opening set, but Kalinskaya immediately broke back. Neither player could gain another advantage before Kalinskaya took the tiebreak to win the set 7-6 (4).
With daylight fading and conditions becoming colder and windier, Olympic champion Zheng found her rhythm in the second set, using her powerful serve to take it 6-4 and force a decider.
Zheng broke early in the third set and moved 1-0 ahead before the 27-year-old Kalinskaya called for a medical timeout. The Russian continued briefly before retiring with Zheng leading 3-0. ■
