BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.47 percent to 3,878.43 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.86 percent higher at 14,144.20 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by these two indices stood at around 2.66 trillion yuan (about 391.81 billion U.S. dollars), up from 2.21 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.

Precious metals, semiconductor chips and computing hardware stocks rallied, while banking, oil and gas, and traditional Chinese medicine stocks suffered notable losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.32 percent to close at 3,535.14 points on Wednesday.

The STAR Composite Index, which reflects the performance of stocks on China's sci-tech innovation board, closed 4.78 percent higher on Wednesday at 1,929.99 points.
