BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- The Qinghai-Xizang Plateau is known as the world's "Third Pole" for its high altitude and harsh environment. On July 1, 2006, the 1,956-km Qinghai-Xizang Railway reached Lhasa, southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, ending Xizang's long history without a rail service.
