TEHRAN, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Explosions were heard Friday night in Iran's southern Sirik County, Hormozgan province, after projectiles hitting an area in the coastal village of Tahrui, state-run IRIB news agency reported, as the U.S. military said it struck Iran's coastal military targets.
A military source, cited by IRIB, confirmed the strikes, adding that warning shots were fired from the county earlier on Friday at "violating" vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
Two "warning missiles" were launched on Friday toward the strait from Karpan village in the same county, IRIB reported.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a post on social media platform X that its forces conducted strikes against Iran Friday night "as a powerful response to yesterday's attack on a commercial ship that was transiting the Strait of Hormuz."
According to CENTCOM, U.S. aircraft struck Iranian missile and drone storage locations and coastal radar sites after Iran hit the Singapore-flagged cargo ship M/V Ever Lovely on Thursday with a one-way attack drone.
The vessel "was exiting the Strait of Hormuz along the Omani coast at the time of Iran's attack," it said, accusing Iran of violating the ceasefire.
The Navy of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps on Thursday stressed that the only authorized routes for vessels' passage through the strait are the ones announced by Iranian authorities, warning that ships' movement through other routes is prohibited.
The strikes came after Iran and the United States on June 18 signed a memorandum of understanding on ending the war and are currently in the midst of negotiations to reach a final agreement. ■
