Russian strikes on Ukraine kill 10, injure dozens
At least 10 people were killed and dozens of others injured in a massive overnight Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine on Tuesday, local authorities said.
Four people were killed and 58 wounded in Kiev, including 40 who were hospitalized, Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram.
The strikes sparked fires across the capital, damaging several apartment buildings and non-residential facilities, Klitschko said.
New round of Israel-Lebanon talks underway in U.S. amid ongoing clashes
A new round of ambassador-level talks between Israel and Lebanon is underway at the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C., as clashes between Israel and Hezbollah continue.
The meeting lasted all day on Tuesday and is set to continue on Wednesday, said a CNN report, citing an Israeli official.
U.S. Deputy National Security Adviser Mike Needham and State Department counselor Dan Holler reportedly led the talks on the U.S. side on Tuesday.
Rubio says Iran peace deal within reach, Tehran agrees to nuclear talks
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday that a peace deal between Washington and Tehran is within reach and that Iran has agreed to negotiate aspects of its nuclear program.
Rubio made the remarks during a hearing before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
He said that a peace agreement as the first phase of the talks could be reached soon, which would include Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz without imposing tolls, removing naval mines and ceasing attacks on ships.
Trump appoints Bill Pulte as acting director of national intelligence
U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday appointed Bill Pulte, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, as acting director of national intelligence.
Trump said in a Truth Social post that Pulte "has deep experience managing the most sensitive matters in America, the safety and soundness of the Markets."
He added that Pulte would remain director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and chairman of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac while serving in the acting role.
EU, WHO step up support for Ebola response in DR Congo, Uganda
The European Union (EU) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have strengthened cooperation to support the response to ongoing Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda, the WHO Regional Office for Europe (WHO Europe) said Tuesday.
The cooperation aims to help national authorities rapidly contain transmission, protect communities and strengthen regional preparedness, the Copenhagen-based WHO Europe said in a news release.
With EU support, WHO is scaling up coordinated action on surveillance, infection prevention and control, community engagement and the continuity of essential health services, in close cooperation with national authorities and partners.■
