Chinese shares close lower Wednesday

BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.25 percent to 4,093.73 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.88 percent lower at 15,736.47 points.

The combined turnover of these two indices totaled 3.24 trillion yuan (about 474.44 billion U.S. dollars), edging down 5.1 billion yuan from the previous trading day.

Sectors such as alcohol, retailing, micro-drama, electricity and power grid equipment led the gains, while robotics and semiconductor sectors were among the top decliners.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.07 percent to close at 4,045.77 points.

The STAR Composite Index, which reflects the performance of stocks on China's sci-tech innovation board, closed 2.53 percent lower at 2,136.75 points.
