BEIJING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.46 percent to 3,948.55 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.7 percent higher at 13,706.52 points.

The combined turnover of these two indices totaled 2.01 trillion yuan (about 291 billion U.S. dollars), up from 1.99 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.

Shares related to medical services and cellular immunotherapy led the gains, while subway equipment and oil and gas extraction stocks suffered major losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.96 percent to close at 3,247.52 points.

The STAR Composite Index, which reflects the performance of stocks on China's sci-tech innovation board, closed 3.44 percent higher at 1,674.19 points.
