Qatar sports minister hails "exceptional" AFC Asian Cup

Qatar's Sports and Youth minister hailed the ongoing AFC Asian Cup and spoke highly of the importance of hosting major sporting events.

DOHA, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Qatar's Sports and Youth minister Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani hailed the ongoing AFC Asian Cup which he said maintained the same exceptional standards seen when the country hosted the World Cup in 2022.

Sheikh Hamad said at a recent press conference that the local organizing committee has utilised many of the working teams that participated in hosting the World Cup.

"The working team continued its successful journey, bringing to life the Asian Cup, maintaining the same exceptional standards for fans and journalists to experience," he added.

"Over 1.2 million tickets were sold. We have seen teams perform at higher levels than expected, such as Jordan, Iraq, and Thailand, elevating the overall competition level of the tournament," noted the minister. "I wish success to all teams, though naturally, I hope for victory for Qatar."

He spoke highly of the importance of hosting major sporting events. "Sports contributes to promoting and introducing countries. Qatar will host many tournaments in the coming years, such as the Basketball World Cup in 2027, the World Swimming Championships, and also the U23 AFC Asian Cup."

Sheikh Hamad revealed that Qatar's ultimate goal is to host the Summer Olympic Games. "Bids have been submitted more than once. I believe we have the capability to host the Olympics and hope to succeed," he said.
