WARSAW, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- After beating Zheng Qinwen of China in the United Cup quarterfinal, the world No. 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland expressed her happiness and praised the organisers of the competition.
Swiatek swept past Zheng 6-2, 6-3 in Perth on Wednesday, as Poland defeated China to enter the tennis mixed-team United Cup semifinals. Swiatek's teammate Hubert Hurkacz beat Zhang Zhizhen in the men's singles
"I'm really satisfied with my performance. We have a very good atmosphere in the team. Playing with Hubert Hurkacz is an exciting thing and I'm really happy to do that at the United Cup," the highest-ranked player on the WTA Tour said in an interview with Polish media on Thursday.
In the past, the 22-year-old has often criticized the intensity of the tennis calendar. In the previous edition of the United Cup, Poland had just one day break before the semifinal clash against the United States. This year Swiatek and her teammates have more time to rest as they will return to the court on January 6th in Sydney.
"I'm really happy that the organisers of the competition listened to our feedback and are supporting us in terms of giving us time to get used to the new conditions. Last year I couldn't find my game as the court in Sydney was a little bit different than in Brisbane. After the travel you are not in the routine and in the rhythm," the Pole explained.
"Hopefully this year is going to be better. We'll do our best to use the time we have to get used to the court in Sydney," Swiatek concluded.
In the semis of the United Cup, Poland will face either France or Norway. ■
