BEIJING, July 19 (Xinhua) -- 6 months, 28 mass killings, 140 deaths, almost all involving guns.

During the first half of this year, the U.S. reached a grim milestone of the deadliest six months of mass killings since 2006.

In the world's most developed country, the safety of citizens cannot be guaranteed. With less than 5 percent of the world's population, the U.S. owns 46 percent of the world's civilian guns.

The country leads the world in gun ownership, gun homicide, and mass shootings. The debate over gun control has waxed and waned. And the government makes little effort to address the root causes -- racism, poverty and lack of access to education.

With appalling gun proliferation, and deadly gun violence, the U.S., always proclaiming itself a defender of human rights, is in reality, quite the opposite.
