U.S. President Joe Biden has been briefed on the latest developments regarding the New York City subway shooting.

NEW YORK, April 12 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were shot and 13 were injured on Tuesday morning at a subway station in Brooklyn, New York, local media reported, citing law enforcement sources.

Local police said transit riders reported the incident at around 8:30 a.m. local time (1330 GMT) and preliminary information indicated a suspect in a gas mask and orange construction vest. The gunman is still at large hours after.

At least 13 people were transported to hospitals, according to fire officials. There were no details on what those injuries entailed.

"In regard to the multiple people shot at the 36th Street subway station in Brooklyn, there are no active explosive devices at this time," the New York City Police Department said on Twitter, appealing citizens to avoid the area of the 36th Street and 4th Avenue area in Brooklyn.

Further investigation is underway.

U.S. President Joe Biden has been briefed on the latest developments regarding the New York City subway shooting, according to the White House.

Press secretary Jen Psaki tweeted on Tuesday morning that White House senior staff are in touch with New York City officials to offer any assistance as needed.
