ANKARA, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

Cavusoglu said on Twitter that his test for COVID-19 came out positive and he was having mild symptoms.

"I will continue my work at home for a while," he added.

The number of daily COVID-19 cases in Turkey has nearly doubled since early January, as the Omicron variant cases surged across the country.

On Feb. 5, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his wife tested positive for COVID-19, while Erdogan's PCR test came out negative after six days.

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar and Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum also tested positive last week.

Turkey on Tuesday reported 94,730 new COVID-19 cases, while the death toll from the virus rose by 309.
