COLOMBO, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Port of Colombo has climbed six places to rank 20th among the world's busiest container ports, according to the latest rankings for the first half of 2026 released recently by global container shipping information platform Alphaliner.
The port handled 4.44 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) during the first six months of the year, up 11.9 percent from the same period in 2025.
Colombo processed 4,444,034 TEUs from January to June, compared with 3,972,053 TEUs a year earlier, an increase of 471,981 TEUs.
The latest performance follows a record year in 2025, when the port handled about 8.3 million TEUs.
The port authority said the higher ranking further strengthened Colombo's position as a major maritime and transshipment hub in the Indian Ocean. ■
