MEXICO CITY, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Jose Alfredo Cabrera Barrientos, mayoral candidate for the municipality of Coyuca de Benitez, was assassinated Wednesday afternoon at the closing of his political campaign in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero, local media reported.
The candidate of the PRI-PAN-PRD coalition died from gunshot wounds after an alleged hitman shot him multiple times at the end of his speech at the political event.
Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection of Mexico reported on Tuesday that at least 22 candidates for elections scheduled for June 2 have been murdered in different regions of the country. ■
