NEW YORK, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday signed an order directing the attorney general and other top federal officials to establish a committee to investigate Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook.

"I hereby establish a committee of inquiry (Committee) to investigate allegations that Federal Reserve Governor Lisa D. Cook made false statements in connection with one or more mortgage instruments," Trump wrote in a presidential memorandum published Wednesday on the White House website.

"The Committee shall investigate the allegations against Governor Cook and report to me whether there is 'cause' for Governor Cook's removal" from her position on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, the memorandum said.

Trump directed the Committee to conduct an in-person hearing at the White House on Nov. 5 to consider the evidence and allegations against Cook, saying the hearing shall last no longer than four hours.

According to the memorandum, Cook is allowed to submit a written position statement to the Committee regarding the allegations, and it states that she "shall appear at the hearing and be examined by the Committee".

The hearing will not be public but, a transcript will be published, the memorandum said.

It is Trump's latest attempt to fire Cook after the Supreme Court ruled in June that Cook can stay in her job for now.

Federal Housing Finance Agency chief Bill Pulte initially alleged in August 2025 that Cook made false statements on mortgage instruments in 2021. Trump then attempted to oust Cook after the allegations, which preceded the Supreme Court's ruling.

Cook has denied all wrongdoing and has not been charged with a crime. ■
