MEXICO CITY, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Nine inmates and a child visitor were killed Thursday in a brawl at El Castillo prison in Mexico's northwestern state of Sinaloa, local authorities said.
Another 16 inmates were injured and taken for medical treatment, the state's Secretariat of Public Security said in a statement.
Personnel from several agencies intervened to restore order, and the prison is now under control, the secretariat said.
The state prosecutor's office has been informed of the incident and will investigate its circumstances and establish responsibility. Social workers are providing the families of the victims with updates.
Prison visits were suspended as a precaution. Authorities said the remaining inmates were unharmed. ■
