OTTAWA, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Wednesday hailed "significant progress" in the Canada-United States trade negotiations, as U.S. President Donald Trump paused 50 percent tariffs on some Canadian goods.

He said on X that Canada has the "best overall trade terms" in these discussions and is now "moving towards an agreement that reinforces that Canadian advantage."

Trump signed proclamations on July 20, imposing an additional 50 percent tariff on certain Canadian goods, accusing Canada of discriminating against U.S. commerce.

Trade ministers of the two countries were meeting Wednesday in Washington D.C. to finalize a deal.

Also on Wednesday, Carney met virtually with provincial and territorial premiers to discuss the ongoing trade negotiations with the United States, emphasizing continued collaboration with governments across Canada.

The prime minister reiterated that the government's goal is to secure the best deal for Canadians, one that provides the greatest possible U.S. market access for Canadian businesses, according to an official statement.

Carney also emphasized the importance of building economic strength at home and diversifying partners abroad to build a stronger, more independent, and more resilient economy.

Canadian media reported that premiers revealed American liquor products would be returned to store shelves and that restrictions on U.S. suppliers in government procurement would be lifted in response to the U.S. lowering tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
