OTTAWA, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Canadian federal government announced Thursday the launch of a new defense innovation secure hub in Calgary in the province of Alberta, aimed at accelerating the development and deployment of sovereign quantum technologies.

The Quantum Defence Innovation Secure Hub will operate under the Bureau of Research, Engineering and Advanced Leadership in Innovation and Science, according to a news release from the Department of National Defence.

A consortium led by the University of Calgary will receive 20.3 million Canadian dollars (about 14.8 million U.S. dollars) over two years to establish and operate the hub.

The initiative brings together partners from Canada's quantum, defense, and innovation sectors to help accelerate the transition of promising Canadian quantum technologies from research into mission-ready capabilities that support Canada's defence and security priorities, said the release.

The hub will support the development of Global Navigation Satellite System-independent navigation technologies, spoofing detection capabilities, quantum-secure communications and timing capabilities, decision-support tools, and testing and validation of quantum devices and systems, said the release.
