MEXICO CITY, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum said Wednesday that she will meet with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Mexico City on Thursday, urging calm as Washington weighs new tariffs on Mexican exports.
Sheinbaum said her government is in talks with U.S. authorities to avert additional tariffs, noting that the economy ministry has presented its arguments against the proposed measures.
Greer said Tuesday that Washington is preparing a new round of tariffs on some 60 countries as the 10 percent duties introduced earlier this year are set to expire on Friday. He did not specify a timeline or reveal whether the new rates would remain at the current level, but said the administration plans to act soon.
Thursday's meeting is part of the scheduled review process for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Sheinbaum said Mexico has previously secured exemptions from similar tariffs, particularly for goods covered by the agreement.
The United States and Mexico began a third round of USMCA talks on Tuesday after Washington on July 1 declined to renew the trade pact in its current form for another 16 years. ■
