TEHRAN, July 20 (Xinhua) -- At least one person was killed and several others were wounded in overnight U.S. strikes on Iran's northwestern provinces of East Azarbaijan and West Azarbaijan, the semi-official Fars news agency reported on Monday.

Fars cited Majid Farshi, director general of East Azarbaijan's crisis management department, as saying that a military area southwest of the provincial capital Tabriz was attacked at 2:35 a.m. local time Monday (2305 GMT Sunday), leaving one dead and several others wounded.

The agency also cited Hamed Saffari, director general of West Azarbaijan's crisis management department, as saying that a location in Silvaneh District of Urmia County was hit in a U.S. airstrike, which left several people injured.

In a post on social media platform X early Monday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces had "successfully completed the ninth consecutive evening of strikes against Iran."

It said the strikes targeted Iranian military command centers, air defense and coastal surveillance sites, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and communications networks "to further diminish Iran's ability to attack commercial vessels and civilian mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz."

Fars also reported explosions in several other Iranian provinces early Monday.

According to the agency, Ehsan Jahanian, Bushehr's deputy governor for security affairs, said two military sites in Khormoj, in the southern province of Bushehr, were struck in two waves. The attacks caused temporary power outages in parts of the city, with electricity restored within minutes.

Fars also quoted Bushehr Governor Mohammad Mozaffari as saying the provincial capital was hit twice within a short period on Monday morning. He said no casualties had been reported and that further details would be released after damage assessments were completed.

The agency also reported explosions in Chabahar and Konarak counties in southeastern Iran, Sirik County in the south, and Bandar-e Mahshahr County in the southwest.

The U.S. Army has, over the past few days, launched several waves of strikes against Iran's southern provinces, claiming that the attacks are in response to the Iranian armed forces' targeting of vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, and aimed at "degrading Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping."

Iran has responded with waves of missile and drone attacks targeting U.S. military bases and facilities in the region.
