WASHINGTON, July 13 (Xinhua) -- South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster on Monday appointed Lindsey Graham's sister, Darline Graham, to serve the remainder of his Senate term following a recommendation by U.S. President Donald Trump.

McMaster made the announcement in a press conference held to honor the U.S. senator, who passed away Saturday at the age of 71.

"Today, under the law, it's my duty to and honor to name someone to serve in the place of this irresistible man, this irreplaceable man, this extraordinary man, for the remainder of his term," he said.

"Lindsey took care of his little sister in years long departed. It's my honor to ask his little sister Darline Graham to finish his work for him now," said McMaster.

The appointment came hours after Trump wrote on social media that he recommended McMaster select Graham's sister for the temporary seat -- an interim post that will run until the current term ends on Jan. 3.

Graham was seeking a fifth six-year Senate term in the November midterm election. His sudden passing leaves an immediate vacuum on the ballot, forcing South Carolina Republicans to quickly find a replacement nominee for that race.

South Carolina businessman Mark Lynch, Congresswoman Nancy Mace from South Carolina, as well as Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette are among the potential candidates, NBC News reported.
