NEW YORK, June 29 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed and another seriously injured in a shooting at a World Cup fan zone used to screen matches, police said.
The shooting happened in San Jose, in the San Francisco Bay Area on the West Coast of the United States, on Sunday night. No World Cup games were being screened at the time, with the only tournament match of the day having finished around 2 p.m. local time.
"Units are currently investigating a shooting in the area of N Market St and W Santa Clara St. One victim was pronounced deceased on scene. The second victim was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries," San Jose police wrote on social media, adding that the incident was "being investigated as a homicide."
The San Francisco Bay Area has so far hosted five matches at the World Cup, and will be the venue for the United States' round-of-32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday. ■
