NEW YORK, May 22 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed and over 30 others injured Friday in a fire and explosions on a barge at a shipyard on Staten Island in New York City, local authorities said.
The fatal victim was a civilian who died at the scene, said Ian Swords, deputy assistant chief of emergency medical services (EMS) operations with the Fire Department of New York City (FDNY).
Speaking at a press conference on Friday night, Swords said 34 FDNY members were injured in the explosions.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed that a fire marshal is in critical condition and one firefighter is in serious condition.
More than 200 first responders and firefighters remained on scene, and the fire has been brought under control, he added.
A comprehensive investigation will begin once the fire is completely extinguished, Mamdani said.
Earlier, reports came in of two workers trapped in the basement of a 150-foot by 150-foot metal structure at the back of the shipyard, according to FDNY officials. As crews entered the building to search for them, two explosions occurred. ■
