MEXICO CITY, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- At least 62 people have died after violence erupted Sunday following the killing of "El Mencho," one of the world's most wanted drug traffickers.
Speaking at a press conference in Mexico City, Mexico's Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection Omar Garcia Harfuch said the dead included 25 National Guard members, a prison guard, an agent from the prosecutor's office, and a civilian woman caught in the crossfire. At least 70 people have been detained.
He also said the violence aimed to stop federal forces and affected public security and mobility.
Daily activities in affected areas began to normalize on Monday thanks to coordination among municipal, state and federal authorities, the minister said.
Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as "El Mencho," was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. The cartel operates in more than 20 Mexican states, making it one of the country's most powerful criminal groups. ■
